The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
According to a press release issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo on September 17, 2026, the incident occurred on September 16, 2026, when the deceased officer and his colleagues were on highway patrol duties along the Gindabour to Kenkyen community road.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a motorbike rider approaching the officers’ location immediately diverted into the bush upon seeing the police vehicle.
Suspicious of the rider’s behaviour, the police team pursued him from a different direction but found him unconscious on the bush road.
The officers picked up the man and were conveying him to a hospital when he died en route.
Following news of the rider’s death, a mob from the community attacked the officers. The attack resulted in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu, while other officers sustained varying degrees of injury. The police vehicle was also damaged during the incident.
The bodies of both the deceased officer and the rider have been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba, and the Regional Intelligence Team are currently on the ground to beef up security and maintain law and order.
Police confirmed that all 36 suspects are in custody, assisting with investigations, and will be brought before the court.
The Police Command has condemned the attack on its officers and gave assurance that the perpetrators will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
