808 prisoners in Ghana’s prisons have been pardoned and the majority have been set free.

These inmates received presidential pardon from Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo.

They were freed based on the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council.

A statement from the Prisons Service Thursday said the President exercised his powers under Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.

The prisoners who have been pardoned include first time offenders, seriously ill inmates, very old prisoners and others.

783 first time offenders and 11 seriously ill inmates have been released by President Akufo-Addo.

Three very old prisoners have also been pardoned.
