Some Ghanaians are to enjoy free electricity for the next three months while others enjoy a 50% discount on electricity tariffs.

Relatively poor persons who consume from 0-50 kilowatt-hours a month will pay no electricity bills for April, May and June.

Others who consume above 50 kilowatt-hours a month, will have 50% off their electricity tariff.

President Akufo-Addo made this announcement in his address to the nation on Thursday, April 9.

He said the decision is part of additional measures being taken by government to mitigate the impact the outbreak of the virus is having on the public.

“We’ve decided on further measures of mitigation for all Ghanaians for the next three months, i.e April, May and June. Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e, for all consumers. That is free electricity for persons who consume from 0-50 kilowatt-hours a month for this period,” the President told the nation.

He advised “all Ghanaians to exercise discipline in their use of water and electricity.”

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has extended the partial lockdown in Ghana by one more week.

An initial two-week lockdown was expected to end on April 13.

The President announced an extension of the lockdown in his address to the nation on Thursday.

The new coronavirus figures come in the wake of enhanced contact tracing to identity and test people who may have contracted the virus.
