Drinking bars are among other public places that remain closed in the wake of coronavirus

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has directed that drinking bars and night clubs should remain closed, as part of government’s efforts to deal with the spread of coronavirus.

The clarification comes after a communique from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) gave the go-ahead for hotels, restaurants and bars to resume operations “while observing appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols.”

In a statement, the Ministry countered the Authority’s:

“Food chains and restaurants (including hotel restaurants) can operate takeout and delivery service only.

“Drinking bars as well as all night clubs remain closed,” it added.

The circular signed by the sector Minister Barbara Oteng-Gyaso supersedes the one earlier issued by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

The Authority had said: “All hotels can operate as normal and host their guests, subject to the specified elevated hygiene protocols and social distancing,” the GTA’s said in a statement.

“Food chains and restaurants can operate sit-down, as well as, pickup and delivery services while observing appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols.

“Drinking bars can operate while observing appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols.”
