Drama unfolded at Assin North as an aspirant in the June 20 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries went after some delegates and party executives to retrieve bicycles he had donated.
Eric Amankwa Blay had donated 250 bicycles to party members before the election.
Despite his donation, the aspirant suffered an embarrassing defeat.
Eric Amankwa Blay managed 44 votes as against the incumbent MP Abena Duruwa Mensah who had 389 votes.
After results were declared, the defeated candidate and his supporters stormed into various houses of delegates across the constituency to retrieve the bicycles.
Eric Amankwa Blay told Adom News’ Alfred Amoh that the motive behind the distribution of the bicycles was for campaign purposes.
The candidate added that failure to endorse his candidature means you don’t like the bicycle.
He claims that each bicycle cost ¢300 and he also shared ¢200 and ¢500 to each delegate and constituency executives to endorse his candidature but they failed to do so.
“I’m not taking back the money but as for the bicycles, I need them back,” he said.
Some party delegates and polling station executives who have their bicycles taken back said they were very disappointed.
168 constituencies were up for grabs in the NPP primaries.
374 aspirants contested the 168 slots to get the nod to lead the party from the constituency level into the elections.
67 aspirants went unopposed and were acclaimed by delegates of the party in the various constituencies.
