After almost three decades, Ghanaians are struggling to come terms with the fact that a highly talented Black Stars squad failed to lift the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Senegal.
The team captained by Abedi Pele and had the likes of Tony Yeboah, Mohammed Gargo, Tony Baffoe, Sarfo Gyamfi and Odartey Lamptey lost the trophy to Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars reached the final playing some wonderful football but were undone by the Ivorians via penalty shootout.
38 years after the match, Odartey Lamptey has said that the result would have been different had skipper Abedi Pele played.
Pele was suspended for the match after picking a yellow card against Nigeria in the semi-finals for allegedly disrespecting the referee.
“I was dying to play with Abedi Pele, he was an African footballer of the Year and was like a genius, we missed him in the 1992 AFCON final and it was a big blow to us if Abedi was part of the squad we would have beaten Ivory Coast and won the trophy,” he said on Joy FM.
Lamptey made 38 appearances for the Black Stars and scored eight goals.
