Mahama Nominates Alban Bagbin as Speaker of 9th Parliament

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has officially instructed the Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to nominate The Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The decision was made after consultations with NDC leadership and recognizes Bagbin’s service in Parliament. Bagbin has been a Member of Parliament for Nadwoli, served as both Minority and Majority Leader, and was the Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

President-elect Mahama highlighted Bagbin’s experience and leadership in his statement, indicating that his appointment aims to enhance Parliament’s role in overseeing and advancing Ghana’s democratic and legislative processes.

The announcement was issued through an official statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President-elect, on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, born on June 9, 1951, in Ghana, is a seasoned Ghanaian politician and a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He has been serving as the Member of Parliament for Nadwoli in the Volta Region since 1997, making him one of the longest-serving MPs in Ghana’s history.
