The Keta Municipal Hospital in the Volta Region is gearing up to launch a significant milestone, a 100th anniversary, scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
The landmark occasion highlighted the hospital’s efforts, endurance and commitment to healthcare delivery in the Municipality and the Volta Region at large.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that over the past century, the Keta Municipal Hospital has established itself as a cornerstone of healthcare in the southern Volta by providing essential medical services to the local community and beyond while its longevity indicated the resilience and dedication of health workers to patient care.
Other information picked by the GNA revealed that it has witnessed remarkable infrastructure growth and achievement which was highlighted by the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Maternity and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Complex in March 2024, courtesy of MTN Ghana Foundation with a 60-bed facility including a 40-bed maternity ward and a 20-bed NICU which aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
With key partnerships with notable organisations such as MTN Ghana Foundation, the health facility has been instrumental in shaping the infrastructure issues through the collaboration for quality service delivery while the relationship also exemplified fruitful public and private partnerships in various healthcare sector.
Impressively, the GH₵ 19 million worth NICU has enabled the hospital to achieve 92 per cent of antenatal care coverage with over 1,236 pregnant women registered for ANC, which showcased a stride in maternal healthcare.
Dr. Martha Ampadu, the Obstetrician Gynaecologist and Head of Department at the Keta Municipal Hospital earlier told the GNA that modern facility established by the MTN Ghana has tackled neonatal and maternal mortality rates resulting in zero maternal rate within one-year period from July 2024 to July 2025 which aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
It was also noted that in March 2025, the hospital has also achieved another milestone by inaugurating a Wound Care Centre, which was solely founded by Mr. Mawuko Dzikunu, the Executive Chairman of Glory Oil Company Limited, which enhanced the facility’s capabilities in managing complex wound cases and offering specialized treatment options.
Dr. Kofi Karikari Bonsu, the Medical Superintendent at the hospital said that the development also resulted in a successful skin graft for a patient who was suffering from a post-traumatic ulcer wound in the year 2025 which reflected on adaptive approach by the hospital to meet community healthcare needs.
He said the Keta Municipal Hospital hold potential as a training hub for medical professionals in specialties like gynaecology and paediatrics and the facilities like the NICU complex further mitigated the need for patients to seek care outside Keta which benefited the local community and beyond.
The GNA also learnt that through the dedicated efforts by the hospital and other health facilities in the area, the Keta Municipal Health Directorate was adjudged best in first-half year performance in the volta region which demonstrated concerted efforts in elevating healthcare delivery and has aspired the hospital to be the preferred healthcare provider in southern Volta and beyond.
As the hospital is gearing up to commemorate its centenary on October 2, stakeholders, individuals and the general public have anticipated the reflections on past achievements and discussions on future healthcare priorities which offered an opportunity to spotlight the hospital’s contributions to health landscape in the region.
Some residents told the GNA that the anniversary celebration is poised to highlight the hospital’s unwavering dedication to serving the community and marking 100 years of healthcare excellence in the country.
The anniversary launching is expected to be witnessed by some notable dignitaries such as Togbi (Professor) Tagbor III, Fia (Chief) of Kedzi as Chairman; Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor, University of Health and Allied Science, as the Guest Speaker.
The rest would be Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, as the Guest of Honour; Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dordo, the Volta Regional Director of Health; Dr. Kofi Karikari Bonsu, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital among others.
The main celebration is slated for 2026.
