Madam Sandra Seyram Kpedor, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Anloga in the Volta Region, has called for the creation of a ready market to support distressed onion farmers in the area.
The farmers, who cultivated the Bawku Red variety of onion, are facing post-harvest losses due to the lack of buyers, with some of the produce already rotting on the farms.
During a visit to assess the situation, Madam Kpedor directed the District Agriculture Department to urgently link the farmers with potential buyers to prevent further losses and enable them to recover their investments.
“The efforts are geared towards creating a market for onion farmers in the Anloga District. We are engaging stakeholders, including schools and caterers, to stimulate demand for the Bawku Red onions and provide relief to the farmers,” she stated.
She added that beyond collaborating with the Agriculture Department, second-cycle schools and caterers under the School Feeding Programme were being encouraged to patronise the locally grown onions as a way of safeguarding the farmers’ livelihoods.
Madam Kpedor appealed to the general public and potential buyers to come to the aid of the hardworking farmers by purchasing the onions to boost the local farming economy.
“Our district has the potential to produce high-quality onions. With the right support, farmers can improve yields and their livelihoods. I hope this effort inspires others to support local farmers,” she said, adding that interested buyers could contact 0246684179 for details.
She further tasked the Agriculture Department to work closely with farmers to facilitate sales and provide technical support.
Some onion farmers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed concern over the lack of a ready market but welcomed the DCE’s intervention. They noted that support from individuals, organisations, and government would strengthen the agricultural sector and improve livelihoods in Anloga.
They appealed to the public to patronise locally grown onions, stressing that such support would contribute to agricultural growth and economic development in the district.
