Ghana loses 2-0 to Japan in international friendly

Ghana has lost 2-0 to Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup clash at Toyota Stadium in Aichi. The hosts controlled the match from early on and capitalised on Ghana’s lapses to pick up a win as Ghana continue their build-up to the 2026 World Cup.

Japan broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Takumi Minamino was left unmarked and calmly slotted home after a midfield turnover by Ghana. The Black Stars, operating without several key players, struggled to gain a foothold in the game and offered very little in attack during the first half.

Midway through the second half, in the 60th minute, Ritsu Doan doubled Japan’s lead with a precise finish into the near-post after a crisp Japanese build-up. From that point Japan held firm while the Black Stars were unable to mount meaningful challenges.

Ghana made several tactical substitutions, with coach Otto Addo replacing starters and introducing fresh legs in an attempt to shift momentum. However the match took a darker turn when Ghana midfielder Abu Francis sustained a serious leg injury while attempting a challenge. He was stretchered off and taken for further medical examination — an unwelcome development in an otherwise difficult night for Ghana.

New goalkeeper Joseph Anang made his debut in the starting XI and produced a smart save in the 5th minute to keep Ghana in contention early. But the defensive unit ultimately could not contain Japan’s structure, pace and dominance in possession.

On attack, Ghana’s best chances came via Brandon Thomas Asante, whose volley was deflected for a corner, and through fresh substitutes who offered more intent. But none found a breakthrough, and Japan’s disciplined defensive organisation held firm.

After the match Addo acknowledged the lessons: “We have a lot to work on,” he said, adding that the injury to Francis is “really, really serious.” Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu congratulated his team’s performance and extended best wishes to the injured player.

Ghana now turn their attention to their next friendly against the South Korea national football team on 18 November and will use the tour to integrate new players and build depth ahead of global commitments.
