Student midwives urged to make judicious use of time

Hajia Mary Lamisi, the Principal of the Midwifery Training College in Bolgatanga, has admonished students of the college to desist from “running to town in the night  to misbehave.”

She said management of the college would not take deviant and shameful acts of any student lightly, and warned that any student caught in acts contrary to the rules and regulations of the institution would be punished.

“When you are caught involved in such shameful behaviour, the school will not take such behaviour lightly, and those caught would be punished,” she said.

Hajia Lamisi said this at the matriculation ceremony and launch of the 75th Anniversary of the college  on the theme: “75 years of excellence in midwifery education; Sustaining Maternal and Child Health Care.”

She said for the 2025/2026 academic year, a total of 200 students accepted offers and enrolled to study in the college, and urged the fresh students to channel their energies towards their studies, and appropriately apportion their time to achieve their purpose as students.

“I encourage you to read every nursing and midwifery related learning materials you have. Also read the school’s hand book and regularly check notices, which are available both online and on our notice boards.

“Students must also take the Ministry of Health, Health Training Institutions and the college’s code of conduct and behave well instead of breaking rules and running to elders to intervene on your behalf,” the Principal said.

Hajia Lamisi said the college was noted for its academic excellence and over the past 75years, churned out quality midwives to boost health service delivery within and outside the country, and entreated the fresh students to emulate the academic performance of past students and even do better.

“As fresh students, have it in mind that, if you don’t pass the licensure examination, you will not be given a license to practice as a midwife. So, do not play with your studies while on campus and out of campus.

“From your first year till you sit the licensing examination, go all out with your studies,” Hajia Lamisi encouraged her students.

Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), who delivered the keynote address, told the fresh students that they were being prepared to enter a profession that was both sacred and demanding.

“Midwifery is not just a career; it is a calling. You will be entrusted with the lives of mothers and newborns. You will witness moments of joy and moments of sorrow. You will need compassion, resilience, and integrity.

“Remember that every safe delivery, every healthy child, and every mother who survives childbirth because of your care is a victory for humanity. You are joining a lineage of excellence that spans 75 years. Carry that torch proudly,” Dr Abubakari said.
