The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has issued a directive making the GhanaCard a compulsory document for all motor insurance transactions effective January 1, 2026.
In a statement signed by Acting Commissioner, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, the Commission outlined that this measure is designed to bolster industry transparency and regulatory oversight.

It mandates that individual policyholders present their Ghana Card, while corporate entities must provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN).
The NIC anticipates this policy will significantly reduce fraudulent activities, enhance Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance, streamline claim processes, and bring the local insurance market in line with global financial service norms.
All motorists are urged to note the upcoming change and ensure they possess a valid Ghana Card for insurance purchases or renewals from the 2026 deadline.
