Police arrest 50-year-old with 714 slabs of suspected Indian hemp

The Ashanti South Regional Police have intercepted 714 slabs of suspected Indian hemp and arrested a 50-year-old commercial driver.

The seizure occurred during a snap checkpoint on the Bekwai–Aputuogya road on January 26, 2026.

Regional Commander DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba stated that the drugs were found concealed in nine nylon sacks aboard a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus.

The driver, Atampugri Akanyani, claimed that an unknown person at Kejetia Lorry Station tasked him to deliver the consignment to Obuasi for a fee of GHC 600.

The suspect has been arraigned before the court, the vehicle has been impounded, and the drugs have been retained as evidence.

DCOP Nyaaba reiterated the Command’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, warning that the region is a “no-go area” for such criminal activities.
