The Central North Regional Police Command has deployed 120 personnel to provide robust security for the 548 delegates at the Roman Catholic School near Centenary Hall, the venue for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries in the Assin Central Constituency.
The deployment, which exceeds the standard recommendation of 70 officers per polling centre, is largely due to the high-profile nature of the contest in the constituency, which had been smooth as at 0800 hours.
Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, one of the presidential aspirants, hails from Assin Central, drawing intense local support and raising the stakes for a peaceful and orderly election.
Police personnel are visibly stationed at the inner perimeter, outer cordon and strategic locations close to the venue.
Their presence aims to deter potential disruptions, manage crowd control and ensure the safety of the delegates, election officials, party agents, and observers.
Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Abraham Acquaye, explained that the enhanced security measures were a proactive step.
“Given the local significance of Mr Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy and the passion it has generated, we’ve taken no chances. Our officers are well-trained and equipped to handle any situation,” he stated.
For the Electoral Commission, Mr Kofi Tisibu, the Returning Officer for the election, confirmed that all electoral materials had arrived on time and had been inspected.
He added that the agents of all the aspirants were present at the centre, with the exception of the representative of Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who was yet to report as at the time of filing this report.
