Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to rise above partisan divisions and uphold unity, compassion, and respect in the discharge of their duties.
Delivering his opening remarks at the First Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Bagbin urged MPs to reflect on the lessons of the past year, which tested their endurance, tolerance, and adherence to parliamentary discipline.
He announced that such opening addresses would be institutionalised at the start of each session to allow Parliament to take stock of its conduct and performance.
The Speaker also led the House in observing a minute of silence in honour of three MPs who passed away during the First Session, including the late Dr Murtala Mohammed of Tamale Central, Ernest Yaw Kumi of Akwatia, and Naser Toure Mahama of Ayawaso East.
He described their deaths as a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the sacrifices inherent in public service.
Mr. Bagbin stressed that while differences of opinion are natural in a democratic Parliament, love, solidarity, and unity of purpose must prevail over hatred and bitter partisanship.
Mr Bagbin urged MPs to strengthen cooperation, build consensus on matters of national importance, and restore public trust in Parliament through disciplined, transparent, and accountable conduct.
The Second Session, the Speaker noted, presents a demanding legislative and oversight agenda, and expressed the hope that members would uphold the dignity of the House and work collectively to advance national development and improve the lives of the people of Ghana.
