NHIA expands NHIS access for tertiary students

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has launched a new initiative, “Campus Connect,” designed to integrate the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) directly into tertiary campus life.

The program was inaugurated at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) in the Western Region.

Led by NHIA’s Marketing and Branding Unit, Campus Connect aims to bridge the gap between students and essential healthcare coverage.

The initiative provides on-campus registration, renewal services, and education to ensure students are protected from healthcare costs while pursuing their studies.

The launch at TTU included a stakeholder meeting with university management, a student engagement forum, and a live registration desk where students could instantly sign up or renew their NHIS membership.

TTU’s Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, welcomed the initiative, highlighting its role in safeguarding student health.

“Health financing is critical. Students often face financial barriers when they fall ill. I urge every student to take advantage of this opportunity to register or renew their NHIS card,” he stated.

Speaking to students, NHIA Deputy Director for Marketing and Branding, Joyce Angela Asiedu (Esq.), emphasized the program’s student-centred focus.

“Campus Connect is about removing barriers. By bringing NHIS services directly to you, we ensure that healthcare costs do not become an obstacle to your education,” she explained.

She also warned students against unauthorized fees for covered services and encouraged reporting such incidents through official NHIA channels.

During the event, Western Regional NHIA Public Relations Manager, Raymond Awiah, informed students that the Scheme is preparing for a significant tariff adjustment this year.

The planned 120% increase is intended to enhance reimbursements to healthcare providers and help eliminate illegal charges at NHIS-accredited facilities.

The NHIA plans to expand the Campus Connect initiative to tertiary institutions across Ghana, as part of its strategy to boost enrollment, improve service accessibility, and actively engage the youth in the national health insurance system.
