Security has been tightened in the Ayawaso East constituency as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Saturday morning began its parliamentary primary to elect a candidate for the upcoming by-election.
The Ghana Police Service has deployed officers at the two designated voting centres to maintain public order and ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
The heightened security presence comes amid spirited last-minute campaigning by supporters of the various aspirants outside the cordoned-off areas.
The primary is being held to select a candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
The parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament, Mr Naser Mahama Toure, on January 4, 2026, after a brief illness.
A total of 1,039 delegates are expected to cast their ballots, according to the Electoral Commission.
Of this number, 544 voters are registered at Centre A, while 495 will vote at Centre B.
Four candidates are contesting the primary: Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the former MP, Mr Mohammed Ramne, the Constituency Chairperson; Mr Baba Jamal, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; and Dr Yakubu Azindow, an academic.
The aspirants spent the morning interacting with delegates in a bid to secure the party’s mandate ahead of the by-election.
