NDC General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey has called on President Mahama to extend sanctions beyond Baba Jamal to other government appointees implicated in voter inducement during the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.
While commending the President’s recall of Baba Jamal from his post as High Commissioner to Nigeria, Kwetey noted that at least two other candidates, serving on state boards, were also found culpable and should face similar consequences.
An NDC investigative committee reported that four out of five candidates in the February 7 primary engaged in widespread monetary inducement, with delegates receiving at least GH¢10,000 each. Only candidate Najib Mohammed Sani was cleared.
Among those implicated was Hajia Amina Adam, a board member of Prestea Sankofa Gold Mines and the Ghana Hajj Board.
Despite the findings, the party confirmed it cannot annul the results, as the election was certified by the Electoral Commission and legal deadlines require a candidate to file by February 11, 2026.
Baba Jamal, who won with 431 votes, will be the party’s nominee.
The NDC is expanding its investigative committee to seven members to conduct a broader review of internal election conduct, which Kwetey described as a “canker” undermining party values.
The by-election is set for March 3, 2026, following the death of the sitting MP.
