Tragedy has struck a family in Abokobi near Somanya after two young boys were found dead in an uncovered manhole within their residential compound on Thursday evening.
The victims, identified as eight-year-old Jason Teye Mensah, a Primary 2 pupil, and nine-year-old Nathaniel Ayernor Kofi, a Primary 3 pupil, were reported missing after they failed to return home following school.
A frantic search by family members came to a devastating end around 6:00 p.m. when their bodies were discovered in the manhole.
The children are the sons of Manye Dede Addo-Teye I, the Developmental Queen Mother of the Plau Division in the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area.
Emergency services were promptly alerted. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service stationed in Somanya arrived at the scene and initiated an operation to pump water out of the manhole, which facilitated the retrieval of the bodies.
The remains of the two siblings have been deposited at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital morgue, where they will be preserved pending an autopsy.
Confirming the incident to the press, the Somanya District Police Commander, Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa, stated that investigations are underway.
He visited the scene personally as part of the initial inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths.
