– Residents of Tema have expressed mixed views on the significance of Valentine’s Day, with opinions divided between celebrating romantic love and showing general care to all.
While some see the day as reserved for couples, others believe it is an opportunity to extend kindness to family, friends and even strangers.
Ms Lawrencia Brimah, a student of the University of Ghana, said the day was meant for couples to exchange gifts and celebrate their bond. Mr Kwaku Nsiah shared a similar view, noting that although he was single and regarded it as a normal day, he would celebrate it if he were in a relationship.
In contrast, Ms Olivia Obesebia, a National Service Personnel, described Valentine’s Day as a time to show love to anyone one cherishes, including strangers, adding that she would celebrate it on her own this year. Ms Magdalene Chankie said the day allowed her to express love to her partner, friends and family.
Mr Emmanuel Lamptey, a port worker, expressed indifference, saying the day held no significance for him.
The differing views reflect an ongoing debate about whether Valentine’s Day should remain focused on romance or be embraced as a broader celebration of love.
