Two confirmed dead as collapsed building traps worshippers

Two people have lost their lives following the collapse of an uncompleted multi-storey building in Accra New Town.

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, confirmed the death toll on Sunday evening, March 29.

He also noted that 14 survivors have so far been pulled from the rubble and transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The incident occurred after a heavy rainstorm weakened the structure, which was situated within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School.

According to officials, the building, which is still under construction, was being used by a group of Christian worshippers at the time of the collapse.

Following the incident, a joint team comprising the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana National Fire Service swiftly moved to the scene.

As darkness fell, crews deployed floodlights and heavy-duty equipment to maintain the momentum of the rescue operation.

Before the arrival of formal emergency services, residents and bystanders mounted their own rescue efforts, using bare hands and simple tools to extract victims from the wreckage.

Authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure the safety of rescue workers.

While the immediate focus remains on saving lives, officials have indicated that a full investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the structural failure once the operation concludes.
