President John Dramani Mahama has called for national restraint regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, arguing that while the debate is significant, the government’s immediate priority remains the “basic needs” of the Ghanaian people.
Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organizations at Jubilee House on Monday, the President described the LGBTQ+ issue as a “deeply sensitive and emotionally charged” topic that requires a measured, democratic approach rather than reactionary rhetoric.
“We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs, education, healthcare, jobs, food, and shelter,” President Mahama stated.
“While there are strong and differing views within our society, these must be addressed through dialogue and the rule of law.”
The President noted that the ongoing parliamentary debate reflects the diversity of Ghanaian opinion but cautioned that any final decision must remain tethered to the Constitution.
He further acknowledged the international scrutiny surrounding the Bill, emphasizing that Ghana seeks a balance between its cultural context and its standing within the global community.
