St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Accra observes Good Friday rites

The St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Accra has observed Good Friday with solemn rites to commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.

The observance, marked by fasting, abstinence, and deep reflection, forms a key part of the Christian Holy Week.

The liturgical activities began with the Stations of the Cross in the morning, where parishioners meditated on Jesus Christ’s journey to Calvary.

Later in the day, the Church held the Service of the Passion of the Lord, a solemn liturgy traditionally observed around 15:00 hours.

The service included the Liturgy of the Word, the reading of the Passion narrative, the Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion using elements consecrated on Holy Thursday.

During the Veneration of the Cross, parishioners paid reverence to the crucifix, reflecting on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for humanity.

Unlike regular services, no Mass was celebrated, in line with Catholic tradition for Good Friday.

The altar remained bare, and the tabernacle was empty, directing the focus of the faithful on the crucifixion.

Parishioners also observed fasting, which typically involves one full meal and two lighter meals, alongside abstinence from meat.

The day was characterised by silence, prayer, and mourning, as Christians reflected on the significance of Christ’s sacrifice.
