Ghanaian students in UK to protest unpaid fees, stipends by Scholarship Authority

By News1

Ghanaian students in the UK will protest on April 17, 2026, at the Ghana High Commission over delayed tuition fees and stipends from the Ghana Scholarship Authority (GSA).

In a statement, the group said some students are owed between 15 and 40 months of living allowances.

The delays have led to students being blocked from university portals, withdrawn from programmes, and, in some cases, referred to debt collectors.

A few now face deportation after losing their student status, with others relying on food banks to survive.

The students say attempts to resolve the issue with the GSA and High Commission have failed.

They also allege that while GH¢256 million was earmarked for scholarships, only about GH¢37 million may be released, leaving an estimated GH¢56 million owed to PhD students alone.

The protest will move from Belgrave Square to Parliament and the BBC.

Organisers warn of a second demonstration on May 31 if no action is taken, coinciding with President John Dramani Mahama’s planned UK visit.

The April 17 protest will be called off only if funds are released, and proof of payment is provided beforehand.
