Police arrest two over fatal robbery on Berekum Chelsea team bus

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in connection with the deadly robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, which resulted in the death of footballer Daniel Frimpong.

In an official statement, police confirmed that the suspected gang leader and an accomplice were taken into custody following an intelligence-led operation.

One of the suspects was injured during an exchange of gunfire with police and is receiving medical attention under guard.

“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident,” the statement read.

“One of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with the police intelligence teams and has been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention.”

The attack occurred on the Bibiani-Goaso road at Ahyiresu, as the Berekum Chelsea squad was returning from their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 clash against FC Samartex 1996.

Armed robbers blocked the road before ambushing the vehicle, forcing players and officials to flee for their lives.

Daniel Frimpong was fatally shot during the incident and later died from his injuries at Bibiani Government Hospital.

His death has sparked widespread grief across Ghana’s football community and raised fresh concerns over the safety of clubs travelling for domestic league matches.

Police have reassured the public that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected.

“Further details will be communicated,” the statement added, underscoring the commitment to ensuring justice is served. Authorities continue to pursue all leads.
