Security personnel in the Oti Region have arrested two suspects and seized a significant quantity of ammunition during two intelligence-led operations in Nkwanta on Sunday, authorities confirmed.
A statement from the police indicates that the first incident, a night patrol team intercepted a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 750 live J/G cartridges concealed inside a black polythene bag. The bag contained three brown boxes, each packed with 250 rounds of ammunition.

Preliminary investigations led to the arrest of Hudu Mahama, 53, the driver’s mate, who reportedly admitted ownership of the ammunition.
In a separate operation later the same day, a joint police-military team pursuing a suspect on a motorbike recovered an additional cache of ammunition.
According to officials, a box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges, totalling 250 rounds, fell from the suspect’s motorcycle during the chase. The unidentified rider managed to flee.
A preliminary inspection of the recovered box led to the arrest of another suspect, Christian Kwasi Alonise, 57.
Both suspects are currently in custody, assisting with further investigations. The seized ammunition has been retained as evidence.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down the escaped motorcycle rider and recover a second box believed to have been carried away by the suspect.
The joint security team reaffirmed its commitment to restoring and maintaining lasting peace and security in the area.
