Mankessim Traditional Council announces demise of Paramount Queen Mother

The Mankessim Traditional Council has officially announced the demise of Nana Ama Amissah III, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Mankessim Traditional Area who died some two months earlier in the United States of America.

Consequently, the Council has declared a state of mourning in the Traditional Area and directed that Mankessim be decorated black and red to signify their tragic loss. The Pakesedo Nsona Royal Family, led by Ebusuapanyin Kwame Kwakye and Ebusuapanyin Kojo Dickson, customarily reported the incident to the council at a durbar to celebrate the Ahoba Ketsewa on Friday, immediately after which the Council made the official public announcement.

The announcement was met by spontaneous wailing by the family and residents as a thick cloud of sorrow hanged over the town and a storm of grief swept through the various communities.Clad in black and red, the traditional authorities and residents could not hide their grief as their heavy hearts weighed down their bodies and souls and tear drowned their puffy red eyes.

As custom demands, libation was poured and a sacrificial sheep slaughtered to ask God, the gods and ancestors for the peaceful repose of her soul. The celebrated queen mother died at age 60 in the US after a short illness. Her remains were flown to Ghana on Sunday, May 10, 2026, by the government.

Born in 1966, Nana Ama Amissah was enstooled on July 02, 1994, and reigned until 2026.
She served her community, the country and the continent dutifully for three decades in so many capacities including her appointment to the Board of Goldbod in May 2025.

In a sombre address to his people, Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI, the Omanhen (Paramount Chief) of the Mankessim Traditional Area, expressed profound sorrow over the demise of the queenmother, describing her as a pillar of wisdom, dignity and compassion.

Recounting their last encounter in Mankessim about two months ago, the Omanhen eulogised the late queen mother’s dedicated service to humanity and traditional leadership, indicating that she left profound impact on the lives and communities of many.

“The Mankessim Traditional Council, the Pakesedo Nsona Royal Family and elders extend their condolences to all affected by this great loss and respectfully ask the public to remember the family in prayers during this difficult period,” he said.

Osagyefo Amanfo Edu announced that the Council, together with the Pakesedo Nsona Royal Family, would set up a committee to plan the funeral to give her a befitting burial.

He expressed gratitude to President Mahama for facilitating the transportation of the queen mother’s remains to Ghana at no cost to the Traditional Council and the Family.

Expressing his commitment to unity and peace in Mankessim, the Omanhen urged his people to leverage the tragedy as a watershed to ensure that unity prevailed in the town.

He observed that Mankessim was peaceful but lacked unity, a situation he said did not augur well for the Traditional Area.
