Gov’t unveils major drainage expansion to tackle Accra floods

By News1

The Works and Housing Minister, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has assured residents of the Greater Accra Region that the government has put in place measures to expand as well as rehabilitate the drainage system to curb the recurrent flooding in the region.

The Minister announced the initiative following a tour of the affected communities with President John Dramani Mahama.

He described the current situation as a critical wake-up call driven by climate change and human encroachment.

“The Government is advancing broader interventions, including the expansion and rehabilitation of drainage infrastructure,” Mr. Adjei stated.

He outlined a multi-pronged strategy that includes the desilting of choked waterways, the construction of new drainage channels, and the strict enforcement of development controls in floodplains to prevent further encroachment.

He added that the long-term plan involves restoring natural buffers like wetlands and lagoons, alongside strengthening early warning systems.

While the Ministry works on these structural solutions, the Minister has urged residents in low-lying areas to prioritise their safety by avoiding floodwaters and moving to higher ground during downpours.
