President Mahama releases GHC300m for flood relief after Accra devastation

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GHC300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood relief and mitigation efforts, following the devastating floods that submerged parts of Accra and other southern communities on Monday, June 29.

The directive, announced on Tuesday, June 30, forms the centrepiece of the government’s emergency response to the unusually heavy rainfall that left many homes submerged, displaced families, and disrupted livelihoods across the capital and beyond.

According to a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the funds have been split into two distinct allocations.

Out of the total amount, GHC150 million has been earmarked for immediate relief assistance to affected individuals and communities, covering essentials such as food, shelter, clean water, and temporary accommodation.

The remaining GHC150 million will be directed toward flood mitigation measures, including drainage improvements and other infrastructure interventions aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of flooding in high-risk areas.

As part of the emergency response, President Mahama has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to bolster ongoing rescue and relief operations.

The security forces are working alongside the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other agencies to reach stranded residents, distribute relief items, and restore order in affected communities.

Earlier on Tuesday, the President conducted an aerial assessment of the flooded areas to evaluate the full extent of the destruction.

The tour informed the series of interventions announced later in the day, which the government says are intended not only to address the immediate crisis but also to strengthen the country’s long-term flood response capacity.

The GHC300 million release is expected to accelerate relief efforts while laying the groundwork for more sustainable solutions to protect vulnerable communities from future flooding incidents.

The government has assured the public that disbursement processes have been expedited to ensure that funds reach affected communities without delay.
