“You either win or you learn”: Queiroz farewell message after Black Stars exit World Cup

Outgoing Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has issued a farewell message to the people of Ghana, marking the conclusion of his tenure following the team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz opened his address with a philosophical reflection on the nature of competition, stating: “Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win, or you learn.”

In a statement released to the nation, the veteran Portuguese tactician reflected on the campaign with a tone of measured pride and candid ambition, while urging stakeholders to prioritise structural development for long-term success.

He acknowledged the disappointment of Ghana’s early exit but emphasised that the journey yielded valuable experience and restored the team’s standing on the international stage.

Expressing what he termed “healthy dissatisfaction,” Queiroz made it clear that the team’s progress should not be viewed as an endpoint.

“Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” he asserted, challenging the nation to adopt a forward-looking mindset.

Central to his farewell message was a call for institutional reform.

Queiroz stressed that the future of the Black Stars depends heavily on investments made off the pitch.

Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent,” he said, underscoring the need for robust infrastructure and support systems.

The coach extended formal gratitude to the leadership of the Ghana Football Association, thanking the President and Board for entrusting him with the national team.

“It was an honor and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars,” he stated.

He also commended his players and technical staff for their “courage, commitment and unwavering dedication” throughout the campaign.

Addressing Ghanaian supporters directly, Queiroz acknowledged the collective disappointment with the World Cup outcome but offered reassurance about the team’s performance.

“We cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage,” he said.

Queiroz concluded his formal address with an optimistic closing statement, affirming: “Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”

His contract with the Black Stars officially concludes with the team’s elimination from the World Cup, bringing an end to his tenure as head coach.

The GFA is now expected to initiate the search for a successor as attention turns to rebuilding efforts ahead of upcoming international competitions.
