Over 500 police officers deployed for Greater Accra clean-up exercise

More than 500 officers from the Accra Regional Police Command have been deployed across strategic locations in the Greater Accra Region to support the upcoming two-day National General Cleaning exercise.

The initiative, mandated by President John Dramani Mahama in response to last week’s devastating floods, is scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, under the theme “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods.”

The exercise, coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, will see ministers, Members of Parliament, MMDCEs, and heads of state institutions lead clean-up activities in their respective communities.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, July 9, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo confirmed that all security arrangements are finalised.

She noted that the deployed officers will serve a dual role: maintaining law and order while actively participating in the sanitation efforts.

“The five hundred is from the regional command, and they will be placed at vantage points to ensure the exercise is successful,” Mrs. Ocloo stated.

She added that the Inspector-General of Police has personally overseen the security strategy to guarantee public safety.

In a significant show of cross-sectoral support, Mrs. Ocloo also revealed that healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, have pledged to deploy staff to participate in the clean-up.

The nationwide campaign follows recent torrential rains that caused widespread flooding, resulting in dozens of fatalities, mass displacements, and extensive damage to property and infrastructure.

Authorities are urging all residents, civil society groups, and businesses to join the effort to accelerate post-flood recovery and mitigate future risks.
