Korle Bu Cardiac Cath Lab reopens 16 months after fire

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has officially reopened the reconstructed and expanded Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s National Cardiothoracic Centre, restoring a vital national health asset destroyed by fire on March 7, 2025.

The inauguration marks the completion of a five-month reconstruction effort, which commenced on February 17, 2026, following a GMTF assessment visit in January.

The new facility is technologically upgraded and has increased capacity to address the growing prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Ghana.

Speaking at the ceremony, GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku described the laboratory as a “superior successor” to the original facility, which had served the nation for eight years since its commissioning in January 2017.

She commended President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership in restoring the centre.

The facility will commence operations with a cardiac intervention programme beginning July 12, in partnership with the National Cardiothoracic Centre, US-based cardiologists, the Mount Carmel Foundation, and Africa World Airlines.

Thirty patients from across Ghana have been selected to receive complex Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device procedures.

The reconstruction aligns with the GMTF’s broader mandate to strengthen specialist healthcare infrastructure, support training, and improve access to care for patients with non-communicable diseases.
