Man killed in Akyem Batabi after alleged rape attempt

A 40-year-old man has died after being attacked with a machete, following allegations that he attempted to rape a young woman in the Akyem Batabi community.

The suspect, identified as the woman’s brother, has surrendered to police.

The deceased has been named as Yaw Nyarko. The suspect, 28-year-old Bismarck Gbafa, is currently in custody at the Akyem Oda Police Station and is assisting with investigations after voluntarily turning himself in.

According to preliminary police reports and resident accounts, the incident unfolded after the victim, Celina Gbafa, returned home and told her brother that Nyarko had ambushed her on her way back from her farm.

She alleged that Nyarko struck her with a stick and attempted to rape her at machete point. She reportedly managed to escape his grip and flee to safety.

Enraged by his sister’s account, Bismarck Gbafa allegedly confronted Nyarko. During the ensuing altercation, Gbafa reportedly inflicted a deep machete wound to Nyarko’s left leg.

The injury caused severe bleeding, and Nyarko collapsed and died at the scene shortly after.

Following the death, Gbafa proceeded to the Akyem Oda Police headquarters to report the incident and surrender himself.

The body of Yaw Nyarko has been deposited at the Akyem Oda Government Hospital morgue, where it awaits an autopsy. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events.
