Mr Issifu Seidu, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, with support from the National Investment Bank (NIB), has commissioned four newly constructed boreholes in the communities of Mozio, Wangau, Gambaga and Nanyeri in the North East Region to improve access to safe and reliable drinking water.
The initiative forms part of the Minister’s commitment to translating climate action into practical, community-centred interventions that address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations while strengthening their resilience to the impacts of climate change.
A statement issued to the Ghana News Agency, said for years, residents of these communities have faced significant challenges in accessing potable water, with many households traveling long distances to fetch water for their daily needs.
It added that the new boreholes were expected to provide a dependable source of clean water for domestic use, improve sanitation and public health, and enhance the overall quality of life in the beneficiary communities, and reduce the burden on women and children, who often spend several hours each day searching for water.
At the commissioning ceremony, Mr Issifu emphasised that climate change was not only an environmental issue but also a development challenge that affected access to essential resources such as water, food and livelihoods.
He noted that meaningful climate action must deliver tangible benefits to communities by addressing the everyday realities faced by vulnerable populations.
The Minister stressed the importance of investing in practical adaptation measures that respond directly to local challenges, adding that strengthening community resilience required collaboration among government, financial institutions, development partners, traditional authorities and local communities.
He expressed his appreciation to the NIB for supporting the construction of the boreholes, describing the partnership as a demonstration of how collaborative efforts could deliver sustainable, climate-resilient development.
He further encouraged residents to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance to guarantee their long-term sustainability and continued service to future generations.
Residents of Mozio, Wangau, Gambaga and Nanyeri welcomed the intervention and described it as a major relief that would significantly improve access to clean water.
They expressed their gratitude to the Minister and the NIB and pledged to work together to protect and maintain the facilities while appealing for continued support to address other climate-related and developmental challenges in their communities.
