President John Dramani Mahama has presented Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles to the immediate past Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (rtd), and retired Service Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), honouring a commitment made after the earlier withdrawal of their armoured ex-gratia vehicles.
The official handover took place at the General Headquarters in Accra on Friday, with the current CDS, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, presenting the vehicles on behalf of the President.
The move follows the government’s decision to recall armoured vehicles previously allocated to the retired chiefs as part of their post-service benefits.
The new Land Cruisers serve as replacement compensation, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to acknowledging the distinguished service and sacrifices of the military’s top leadership.
In his remarks, Lt Gen Agyapong lauded the former commanders for their enduring contributions to national security and the GAF’s institutional growth.
He also updated the gathering on key ongoing projects, including infrastructure upgrades, welfare enhancements, and strategic modernisation efforts to bolster the operational readiness of the armed forces.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (rtd), expressed deep appreciation to President Mahama for keeping his word, calling the gesture “a clear testament to the President’s regard for the welfare of retired military personnel.”
He further commended Lt Gen Agyapong and the current GAF leadership for their reform agenda and development initiatives, which he noted were improving both personnel well-being and operational effectiveness.
