Six students of Obuasi Secondary Technical School have been arrested in connection with a violent incident in which the school’s headmaster was allegedly attacked.
Following the incident, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly has ordered the indefinite closure of the school, and the students are currently assisting with investigations.
According to reports, tensions at the school began to escalate after some students alleged that the headmaster had been seen in a nearby bush burying a fetus.
The students further claimed that the incident was linked to allegations that the baby resulted from an abortion involving a student.
The allegations rapidly spread across the student body, inciting anger and leading to the mobilisation of students who confronted the headmaster.
The situation subsequently degenerated into violence, with the headmaster being attacked by a mob of students.
During the attack, students went on a rampage, causing significant damage to school infrastructure and property.
According to reports, three staff bungalows were destroyed, and several vehicles were vandalised. Other valuable property was also damaged in the course of the disturbance.
The Obuasi Municipal Assembly, in an official statement, confirmed the indefinite closure of the school, describing it as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, teaching staff, and non-teaching staff, and to prevent any further disturbances on campus.
The Assembly further stated that the closure would allow for thorough investigations into the matter and the restoration of order on the school’s premises.
The Ghana Police Service has since deployed personnel to the school to maintain security and prevent any recurrence of violence.
Police have arrested six students in connection with the alleged assault on the headmaster and the destruction of property. The suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
Authorities have assured the public that all persons found to have been involved in the incident will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Service are conducting joint investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify all persons responsible.
The headmaster, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, sustained injuries during the attack. He was subsequently transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where he received medical attention.
Authorities have appealed to parents, guardians, and members of the general public to remain calm and refrain from acts that could further destabilise the situation.
The public has also been urged to avoid speculation and to allow the relevant state agencies to conduct their investigations without interference.
The incident has been condemned by education stakeholders and community leaders, who have called for restraint and the rule of law.
