The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has confirmed that 12 people died in Thursday morning’s horrific pile-up on the John Teye-Ofankor stretch.
The crash, involving seven vehicles, including two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars, and a tricycle, also left multiple survivors injured and hospitalised at Ga North Municipal and Achimota Hospitals.
Offering condolences to grieving families, the NRSA called the incident a “grim wake-up call” for reckless driving and unroadworthy vehicles.
The Authority warned that the combination of excessive speeding and mechanical failure is proving deadly, urging all drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits (90km/h highways, 50km/h urban areas, 30km/h built-up areas) and prioritise regular maintenance.
Police MTTD are currently on-site managing traffic and clearing the corridor.
The NRSA vowed to intensify enforcement and education, stating, “Road safety is a shared responsibility; negligence has a heavy price.”
