The Ministry of Works and Housing has announced that a major one-year drainage project to address perennial flooding in Kaneshie will commence on September 7, 2026, with significant road closures and traffic diversions expected until October 2027.
The project, part of the GARID initiative, involves constructing a 1.5 km-long, 10-metre-wide double-cell underground drain along the Dr Busia Highway, replacing the current inadequate twin-pipe system.
The new drain will connect to existing infrastructure at Accra Academy and Mpamprom Junction.
The westbound carriageway from Mpamprom Junction will close from September 7, with diversions via Awudome Cemetery Road, Oblogo, and Mataheko. Mpamprom Junction will reopen in early December, but the Kaneshie Station–First Light section remains closed until August 2027.
A final closure at First Light Junction is scheduled for September–October 2027. Alternative routes include the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange and Circle-Achimota Road.
Pedestrian walkways and footbridges will be maintained. Toll-free lines, WhatsApp, and the GARID website are available for updates. The Motor Traffic and Transport Department will support traffic management.
Minister Ahmed Ibrahim acknowledged the inconvenience but stressed the long-term benefits for lives and property.
Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu apologised for the disruption and urged full public cooperation with diversions and contractors.
