The Keta Municipal National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has commenced Phase Two of its distribution of relief items to communities affected by recent flooding within the Municipality, as part of continuing efforts to support victims of the disaster.
The relief items have so far been distributed to seven affected communities, such as Lawoshime, Agorvinu, Awaflakpota, Vodza, Keta Central, Abutiakope and Dzelukope Amugo, with more communities expected to benefit in the coming days.
Mr Wonder Setsoafia Deynu, the NADMO at Keta, said the relief items distributed include Wellington boots, mosquito repellents, bags of beans, rice, blankets, buckets, cooking oil, mosquito nets, basins, soap, plastic plates and other essential household items, aimed at cushioning affected residents as they recover from the impact of the flooding.
“As part of the broader flood response, NADMO, in collaboration with the Keta National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has also begun the renewal and registration of new National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards for flood victims, and the exercise is currently ongoing within the affected communities to ensure victims have continued access to healthcare services,” he said.
Mr Deynu acknowledged that, despite the progress made so far, several affected communities, basic schools and health facilities such as Anyako, Konu, Aborlove-Nolopi, Vui, Anlo Afiadenyigba, Tengekope, Atiavi-Atime, Atiavi Glime and Wenyagor, among others were yet to receive relief support, and were still awaiting assistance under the ongoing response.
He explained that the phased approach to the distribution exercise was necessary to ensure that relief items reach all affected communities in an organised and equitable manner, taking into account the scale of the flooding and the logistical demands of reaching multiple communities across the Municipality.
The NADMO Director appealed to residents and affected institutions in communities yet to receive support to remain calm and have faith in the ongoing response efforts, and assured them that the organisation is working diligently to extend relief items and the necessary support to all affected areas in the coming days.
Mr Deynu reiterated that Keta Municipal NADMO remains committed to ensuring that no affected community or vulnerable person is left behind in the ongoing flood response, and stressed that the organisation would continue to prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable as the distribution exercise progresses.
He further encouraged beneficiary communities to make judicious use of the relief items provided, while urging residents in areas still awaiting support to continue cooperating with NADMO officials and volunteers as the exercise moves into its next phase.
Some beneficiaries Ghana News Agency spoke with expressed excitement over the NADMO supports and pledged to use the items for the intended purposes.
They also appealed to other well-meaning individuals and organisations to support the NADMO with relief items to enable all affected victims’ benefit from the exercise.
