The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has held a series of meetings with key stakeholders in the medical fraternity, focusing on critical challenges confronting young medical professionals in Ghana.
The meetings brought together the national leadership of the Junior Doctors Association (JDA), the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association (FGMSA), and the Medical Students Association.
Discussions centred on three core areas: training, welfare, and career progression, issues that have long been a source of tension between medical professionals and successive governments.
Dr Bawumia emphasised that young medical professionals will carry the weight of Ghana’s healthcare system in the coming years, and stressed the need for deliberate policies to address the bottlenecks they face from training through to career advancement.
According to his office, the engagements are part of a broader effort by the NPP flagbearer to seek the views of key stakeholders to shape better policies and improve healthcare delivery across the country.
The meetings signal a renewed push by the opposition leader to position healthcare, and particularly the welfare of frontline health workers, as a central plank of his policy agenda ahead of the next election.
