A police officer has been identified and interdicted following his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a university student on the Tema Motorway last month.
General Corporal Robert Koranteng was suspended from duty pending an investigation into the Aug. 27 crash that killed Ivan Baidoo, a 20-year-old second-year law student at Central University, according to a police statement.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. near the old toll booth area at the Accra end of the motorway.
According to a petition filed by the victim’s family, Baidoo was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle ridden by Samuel Arthur Wesley when Koranteng, on a separate police motorcycle, began pursuing them from the UPSA-Legon junction.
The petition alleges the officer struck the rear of their motorcycle, causing both men to fall. Baidoo sustained fatal injuries, including head trauma and internal bleeding.
The Airport Police initially handled the case, in which Wesley was charged with careless driving.
The family’s lawyers, Nyamekye & Partners, petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Sept. 7, arguing the initial investigation was “lackadaisical.”
The CID’s Homicide Unit has since taken over the case.
The police statement said the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) is investigating the officer’s conduct.
“The Ghana Police Service assures the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome,” the statement read.
The family has offered a GHC50,000 reward for information leading to a full account of the events.
