The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called on the government to reserve 20% of admissions in Catholic mission schools for Catholic students.
The Bishops made the call in a statement on Monday, saying it implements a decision from their 2025 National Catholic Education Forum, not a new proposal.
They argue the quota is necessary for the founding churches to fulfil their mission of religious and moral formation.
The Conference stressed that the policy must be administered transparently to prevent corruption.
In addition to the quota, the Bishops are demanding a concluded agreement between the government and Churches on mission school management, a review of the computerised school placement system over fairness concerns, and an investigation into allegations that parents are paying for school placements.
The Bishops also called for greater clarity on “protocol” admissions and a stronger appeals process for families, stating that the ultimate goal is a system where “merit, choice, fairness, and above all the good of the child determine who is admitted where.”
