The police have gunned down an alleged robber at Galoway near Agbogboloshie in Accra after a gunfight, retrieving an AK 47 assault rifle with 186 rounds of ammunition.
The Accra Regional Police Command said on Thursday September 10, 2026, police received credible intelligence that four-armed men, riding motorbikes, were heading towards a Shell Filling Station near Agbogboloshie for a planned robbery operation.
A statement issued and signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, said a team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate (PID), assisted by the Operational Unit, proceeded to the area.
“The team encountered the suspected robbers at Galoway Police Barrier, resulting in an exchange of gunfire during which one of the suspects was shot,” it said.
“The remaining suspects abandoned their motorbikes and fled.”
The statement said the injured suspect was found in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle with serial79-HF3014, fitted with a double magazine, containing 135 rounds of ammunition.
An additional 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition were also retrieved.
“The suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival,” the statement said.
“His body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.”
The Police also recovered two unregistered motorbikes, a Royal and an Apsonic, which were being retained together with the firearm and ammunition as exhibits for further investigations.
It said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding the planned robbery operation.
The Command assured the public that it remained committed to undertaking intelligence -led operations against armed robbery and other violent crimes to protect lives and property.
