Hamzata rescues Kotoko as Medeama secure draw at Baba Yara

Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, as the Porcupine Warriors failed to secure a victory for the second consecutive week in the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League.

The result followed a similar 1-1 draw against FC AshantiGold in Obuasi last week, leaving Kotoko ninth on the league table.

Medeama, the league leaders, proved a tough nut to crack for the home side, taking the lead through a well-executed set-piece before Kotoko captain Musah Hamzata restored parity in the second half.

The visitors started brightly, enjoying greater possession and creating promising opportunities in the opening 15 minutes, while Kotoko struggled to establish their rhythm.

The match began on a cautious note, with both sides probing for openings and launching occasional attacks into each other’s vital areas.

Medeama, however, looked more threatening whenever they surged forward, although their early dominance yielded no immediate reward.

Kotoko gradually grew into the game after the 20th minute, making a few incursions into the visitors’ penalty area, but their lack of sharpness in front of goal remained evident.

Despite the home side’s improvement, Medeama continued to dictate the pace and looked the more likely team to break the deadlock.

Their persistence paid off in the 42nd minute when Osman Safianu rose above the Kotoko defence to head home a well-delivered free-kick from Prince Owusu, awarded just outside the right side of the penalty area.

The goal prompted Kotoko to launch two successive attacks in search of an immediate response, but the Medeama defence remained compact, effectively neutralising the threats.

The visitors held on to their slender advantage until the referee signalled the end of the first half.

Kotoko returned from the break with renewed urgency, clearly determined to erase the deficit and avoid another disappointing result before their home supporters.

However, their attacking approach remained somewhat restrained, with Emmanuel Mammah often isolated upfront as the home side struggled to commit enough players into the attacking third.

The situation made it relatively easy for the Medeama defenders to contain Kotoko’s advances and repel their threats.

The Porcupine Warriors eventually found their breakthrough when captain Musah Hamzata rose above the Medeama defence to head home the equaliser, 10 minutes into the second half.

The goal injected fresh confidence into the home side, who made three substitutions around the hour mark in a bid to turn the game around and secure the maximum points.

The changes, however, failed to produce the desired impact, as both teams continued to push forward in search of the decisive goal.

The encounter subsequently developed into an end-to-end contest, with both coaches adopting an increasingly offensive approach and leaving spaces at the back.

The attacking display brought renewed excitement to the stadium, with supporters responding with loud cheers as the two sides traded attempts in the closing stages.

Despite frantic efforts from both teams to snatch a late winner, neither could find the breakthrough, leaving the contest to end one goal apiece.
