Sulemana Abdul-Samed, widely known as Awuche and celebrated as Ghana’s tallest man, has passed away at the age of 33.
He died in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been receiving treatment for complications linked to gigantism.
Standing at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres), his extraordinary stature had made him a nationally recognised figure.
A family source confirmed the death to Graphic Online, adding that preparations are underway for his burial in Tamale, in accordance with Islamic rites.
A native of Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, Awuche was initially treated at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before being referred to Tamale for specialised care.
His condition first drew widespread public attention when appeals were made for financial support to fund his treatment.
Philanthropist and businessman Ibrahim Mahama later stepped in, covering the full cost of his care at TTH and expressing willingness to facilitate further treatment abroad if necessary.
On July 11, 2026, an aide to Mr Mahama, Rafik Mahama, announced that doctors at TTH had reversed an earlier recommendation to amputate Awuche’s left leg, following a comprehensive reassessment.
He reiterated Mr Mahama’s continued commitment to covering all medical expenses.
According to family members, Awuche was not born with his condition; his rapid growth began at a young age and was later diagnosed as gigantism.
Over time, his towering height made him a familiar and striking presence wherever he went, earning him the title of Ghana’s tallest man.
His passing has drawn an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends, and the broader public, with many taking to social media to mourn and celebrate his life.
