Health consultant warns young women, teenagers against unsafe abortion

Dr Thomas Kyere, a Health Consultant at the Sunyani branch of the 21st Clinic, a facility that specialises in sciatica and other health-related conditions has warned teenagers and young women against unsafe abortion.

He emphasised that applying herbal concoctions, unapproved drugs, and harmful substances to terminate pregnancies was hazardous and ended in serious health complications and even death.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani, Dr Kyere said many girls had died as a result of unsafe abortion, asking those who intended to terminate “unwanted” pregnancies to visit nearest health facilities.

He said societal challenges like stigmatisation and discrimination, social exclusion, fear, and poverty ought not to be reasons for pregnant girls to opt for unsafe abortion.

“Using incorrect medical procedures to terminate pregnancy is very dangerous to the body system and one can possibly die in the process”, Dr. Kyere advised.

He advised girls to stay away from pre-marital sex, urging those who could not control their sexual desires to protect themselves against pregnancies.

Dr Kyere said teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortion remained detrimental to the wellbeing and could ruin the future of girls and advised girls to avoid peers who could influence them badly.

“But in case you need abortion services just feel free and walk to the nearest health facility for the service, in order not to cause any irreparable damage to your health”, he advised.
