Kadjebi blackout disrupts businesses, livelihoods

Residents of Kadjebi in the Oti Region have expressed frustration over a prolonged power outage disrupting economic activities and daily lives in the area.

The blackout, which began on Thursday at about 1400 hours, lasted until around 1200 hours on Friday, leaving homes and businesses without electricity for nearly 22 hours.

Affected residents told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the outage had significant consequences on their livelihoods, particularly for those whose work depends heavily on electricity.

Mr Shadrach Issifa, Executive Director of El-Shaddai Research Center for Ethical Governance, a think tank in Kadjebi, said the situation disrupted his academic engagement.

He explained that he had scheduled a PowerPoint presentation for students on Friday but was compelled to resort to manual methods due to the lack of power.

According to him, although information available indicated that the outage was caused by a fire outbreak at a GRIDCo installation in Akosombo, the response time to restore power could have been faster.

Ms Justine Gyapong, a fishmonger, lamented the losses she incurred as a result of the outage.

She noted that fish stored in her refrigerator went bad, leading to financial setbacks that would affect her business operations.

Mr Kwasi Amankwa, a local tailor, also shared similar concerns, stating that the blackout interrupted his work schedule and reduced productivity.

Residents are therefore calling on the relevant authorities to take proactive measures to prevent future occurrences and ensure prompt response to power outages to safeguard livelihoods and economic activities in the area.
