President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to allocate more than GHC200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the expansion project at the Police Hospital in Accra.
The project is expected to deliver a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan equipment, and a new accident and emergency centre.
Speaking at the commissioning of an 85-bed ward complex at the hospital on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, President Mahama stated that the government intended to complete the expansion and put the facilities into service before the end of 2027.

He noted that the expansion would add 106 beds to the hospital’s existing capacity, bringing the total to more than 300.
The completed facility will also feature 11 consulting rooms, four paediatric consulting rooms, three general surgical theatres, an orthopaedic theatre, an endoscopy unit, and a mortuary with a capacity of 222.

President Mahama disclosed that Cabinet had decided to terminate the contract for the expansion project following 22 years of delays, prolonged disagreements, and cost overruns involving the contractor.
“Our contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We’re going to complete it ourselves,” he said.
Two ambulances were also handed over to the hospital to support emergency response and patient care.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the new ward complex had increased the hospital’s bed capacity to a little over 200.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr Samuel Otu-Nyarko, said the additional 85 beds would ease pressure on the hospital, adding that the total bed capacity now stands at 205.

Dr Otu-Nyarko also announced that the new building had been named the Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex.
