Mahama sets November 2027 deadline for completion of La General Hospital

By News1

President John Dramani Mahama has set a November 2027 deadline for the completion and commissioning of the reconstructed La General Hospital, following a site inspection of the project.

Accompanied by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the President praised contractors and workers for the steady progress made so far and urged them to sustain the momentum to meet the target date.

He acknowledged that the prolonged closure of the hospital had placed significant strain on neighbouring health facilities, stressing the urgency of restoring access to quality healthcare for residents of La and surrounding communities.

During the visit, President Mahama also announced plans to repurpose the COVID-era emergency centre at Burma Camp to handle emergency cases, a move aimed at reducing treatment delays.

He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventive healthcare, citing the recently launched Free Primary Healthcare initiative as a key part of that strategy.

Health Minister Akandoh explained that while redevelopment of the hospital began in 2020, the project faced funding and payment challenges that stalled progress. He confirmed that full-scale work resumed in 2025 after those issues were resolved.

Upon completion, the hospital is expected to serve over 50,000 residents in La and neighbouring areas, significantly boosting healthcare delivery in the nation’s capital.
