The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has renamed its national headquarters at Adabraka after the party’s founder, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, in a ceremony marking what would have been his 79th birthday.
The building will now be known as “Jerry Rawlings House,” with President John Dramani Mahama presiding over the official naming and bust unveiling at 9 am today, Monday, June 22.
The event is being organised in partnership with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation and is part of a series of activities commemorating the life and legacy of Ghana’s former military leader and statesman, who passed away in November 2020.
Speaking on the significance of the occasion, the party described the naming as a tribute to Rawlings’ pivotal role in Ghana’s political history, from the 1979 and 1981 revolutions to the establishment of the Fourth Republic.
The commemoration is being held under the theme: “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”
Later in the day, at 4 pm, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences near the CSIR will host a lecture and exhibition.
Renowned Ghanaian academic and lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata will deliver the keynote address, with additional remarks from Dr. Akwasi Opong Fosu, former Local Government Minister and current GIPC Board Chairman, and Kofi Totobi Quakyi, former Minister for Information and National Security.
The NDC has extended an open invitation to party members, supporters, cadres, and the general public to participate in both events.
